okie.another movie review! hahas. this time is a horror one: TALE OF TWO SISTERS! hahas. enjoy manx.
Two sisters, Su Mi and Su Yeon, return home after a spell of illness, only to be greeted by their mildly hysterical stepmother (played in true evil stepmother fashion, with a porcelain-white face and blood-red lips by Yeom Jeong A).
The three get sucked into a spiral of mutual hatred and recriminations within the claustrophobic confines of the isolated Gothic house.
Its flower-motifed wallpaper, mahogany armchairs and thick carpets are pregnant with murderous menace, just like the fittings in the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick's horror classic, The Shining.
The sisters' stepmother is not the only one spooking them; a spirit in the house also haunts them in their dreams.
All this while, their father looks on absent-mindedly, an emotionally reticent presence whose negligence of his teenage daughters is criminal.
Something is rotten in this household but what exactly is the source of its malady?
Just as red herrings and dead ends leave one's patience as thin as the female protagonists' frayed nerves, Kim pulls the rug from your feet with a twist, a la what 'illusionist' David Lynch conjured up in Mulholland Drive.
Suffice to say that the second half holds the key to the mystery and people are not quite who they seem to be.
While not a conventional horror picture, it still obliges Kim to deliver a few horror set pieces to appease those looking for quick scares.
The actors put in credible performances. Im Soo Jung, who plays elder sister Su Mi, gets the right balance between vulnerability and defiance while Yeom is deliciously high-strung and malicious.
The tender bond between the sisters, successfully brought out by actresses Im and Moon Geun Young, also gives the denouement emotional resonance.
While the narrative may be too convoluted for its own good, this movie scores with its good production design and ambitious ruminations on the shackles of guilt.
